Why Study in China?
The China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) is a new standardized exam for international undergraduates applying to Chinese universities. It measures academic readiness through core subjects — notably Professional Chinese, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry — so institutions can compare applicants on a common scale.
Structure & subjects
The exam follows a compulsory + optional model across five subjects in two groups.
Group | Subject | Compulsory / Optional | Language | Duration | Questions |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Professional Chinese | Liberal Arts & Business (Chinese) | Compulsory for Chinese-taught programs | Chinese | 90 min | 100 MCQ |
Professional Chinese | Science (Chinese) | Compulsory for Chinese-taught programs | Chinese | 90 min | 100 MCQ |
Foundation | Mathematics | Compulsory | Chinese / English | 60 min | 48 MCQ |
Foundation | Physics | Optional (program-dependent) | Chinese / English | 60 min | 48 MCQ |
Foundation | Chemistry | Optional (program-dependent) | Chinese / English | 60 min | 48 MCQ |
Which subjects to take?
Chinese-taught programs
• Liberal Arts & Business: Liberal Arts & Business Chinese + Math.
• STEM: Science Chinese + Math + Physics (and sometimes Chemistry).
TCSOL applicants are exempt from the Liberal Arts & Business Chinese test.
English-taught programs
• Liberal Arts & Business: Math.
• STEM: Math + Physics (and sometimes Chemistry).
Always confirm program-specific requirements on the target university's admission page.
Test dates & format
Dec 21, 2025 — First global CSCA test.
From 2026 the CSCA will be offered five times a year (January, March, April, June, December). The exam will be primarily online (take-at-home), with offline computer-based or paper-based centers in some countries.
Fees & payment
RMB 450 for one subject; RMB 700 total for two or more subjects. Accepted payment methods include Alipay, WeChat Pay, UnionPay, VISA, and MasterCard.
Registration & results
Registration for the inaugural global test opens in November 2025. Register on the official CSCA website: www.csca.cn.
Each subject is scored out of 100. Results: online/computer-based tests — within 7 working days; paper-based tests — within 14 working days.
Why it matters
The CSCA will become a required part of the undergraduate application package for international students starting with the 2026 intake. Public universities participating in the Chinese Government Scholarship will be among the first to require CSCA transcripts. University-specific minimum scores will be set after trial runs (e.g., October 2025).
