Why Study in China?
The China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) is a new standardized test designed for international students applying to Chinese universities at the undergraduate level. It evaluates academic readiness through key subjects — Professional Chinese, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry — allowing universities to assess applicants on a unified scale.
Structure & Subjects
The CSCA follows a compulsory + optional structure across five subjects grouped into two categories.
| Group | Subject | Requirement | Language | Duration | Questions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Professional Chinese | Liberal Arts & Business | Compulsory for Chinese-taught programs | Chinese | 90 min | 100 MCQ |
| Professional Chinese | Science | Compulsory for Chinese-taught programs | Chinese | 90 min | 100 MCQ |
| Foundation | Mathematics | Compulsory | Chinese / English | 60 min | 48 MCQ |
| Foundation | Physics | Optional (program-dependent) | Chinese / English | 60 min | 48 MCQ |
| Foundation | Chemistry | Optional (program-dependent) | Chinese / English | 60 min | 48 MCQ |
Subject Selection Guide
Chinese-taught programs
• Liberal Arts & Business: Professional Chinese (Liberal Arts & Business) + Mathematics
• STEM programs: Professional Chinese (Science) + Mathematics + Physics (and sometimes Chemistry)
Note: TCSOL applicants are exempt from the Liberal Arts & Business Chinese test.
English-taught programs
• Liberal Arts & Business: Mathematics
• STEM programs: Mathematics + Physics (and sometimes Chemistry)
Always verify subject requirements on your target university’s official admissions page.
Test Dates & Format
December 21, 2025 — First global CSCA examination.
Starting in 2026, the CSCA will be held five times a year — January, March, April, June, and December. Tests will primarily be conducted online (take-at-home), with limited offline computer-based or paper-based options available in select countries.
Fees & Payment
• RMB 450 for one subject
• RMB 700 total for two or more subjects
Accepted payments: Alipay, WeChat Pay, UnionPay, VISA, and MasterCard.
Registration & Results
Registration for the inaugural global test opens in November 2025. Apply through the official CSCA website:
www.csca.cn.
Each subject is scored out of 100. Results are released within 7 working days for online/computer-based tests and within 14 working days for paper-based tests.
Why It Matters
Beginning with the 2026 intake, the CSCA will become a mandatory component of undergraduate applications for international students. Participating public universities — especially those under the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) — will require CSCA transcripts. University-specific minimum score thresholds will be announced following trial runs (expected October 2025).
